Understanding Bibi?s Urgency: Israel is Only Target of Iran?s Need for Islamic Apocalypse

Demand for War: Fascinating Details of the Twelver Messiah of Shia Muslims

Understanding Bibi?s Urgency: Israel is Only Target of Iran?s Need for Islamic Apocalypse

Why does Iran seem to only fixate upon war with Israel above any other goal? In fact, the need for an apocalyptic war against the Israeli state is the centerpiece of their religion and the key to unlocking paradise, in their estimation. The issue of the Shia?s messiah brings to light perhaps the most important aspect of the warmongering now occurring in the Middle East?that the bloodlust is religious in nature and not likely to go away on its own, ever. In fact, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently stated he?d like to see Israel gone. So how do we understand Shia Iran?s seeming eternal hatred for Israel?

Perhaps the best way to understand this is that the Iranian Shias see attacking Israel as a way to jump-start the final Muslim holy war and usher in the beautiful era of Islamic world preeminence?a time of peace and plenty. This final apocalypse is interpreted as Iran?s war against Israel, which must occur before paradise is established. This is why the Israelis fear a nuclear armed Iran.

I. Islamic Sects: Sunni & Shia

There are two main sects of classic Islam. The first is the approximately 90% majority Sunni. Shia, are the 10%-15% minority sect. Both believe in a Muslim Messiah who comes back to restore the righteous kingdom of Allah. One writer describes them:

The Muslim world is separated into two main groups of adherents, the Sunni and the Shiite (or Shia). The Sunnis are the dominant group with Shiites being found predominantly in Iraq and Iran. Of the Shia, the largest group is the Twelvers, or Imami Muslims.

The schism dates back to death of Mohammed in AD 632. The Shia believe that the head of the Islamic religion is passed through the bloodline of Mohammed or imams selected by Allah. The Shia believe that leadership of Islam passed to Mohammed?s cousin and son-in-law, Ali. The word ?Shia? is a shortened form of ?Shia-t-Ali,? which means ?the party of Ali.? Shia leaders are called ?imams.?

Sunnis, on the other hand, believe that the legitimate head of Islam is elected from among the qualified Islamic clerics. Sunnis chose Abu Bakr, a close friend and prot?g? of Mohammed, as the first Caliph of the greater Islamic nation. The word ?Sunni? means ?one who follows in the traditions of the prophet.? The Shia have always rejected these elected Sunni leaders.

II. Who Are the Twelvers?

The Twelvers are the largest sect in Shia Islam. In Shia, there were 12 holy Imams, the last one hidden by Allah until the time came for his righteous judgment. Therefore, this group is known as the Twelvers and they await the return of the Mahdi messiah who comes back to lead his people to victory over all foes. After this the Mahdi creates a worldwide just Muslim state. This final apocalypse is interpreted by Iran as war against Israel, which must occur before paradise is established. This is why the Israelis fear a nuclear armed Iran. Says Sacred Texts:

The Twelver Sh??a, or Ithna-?ashar?ya, are numerically the largest of the Sh??? sects, and exhibit most of the doctrines which became classical with the Sh??a. Theologically, they believe that since God is essentially good, He cannot do evil. He has created man with free will in order to know Him, and desires man?s welfare. It follows that He would not leave man without guidance; thus the books of the prophets have been sent down. Even so, as the sects of Islam attest, confusion arises, so it follows that God has given man in addition to the Prophet an infallible guide in religious matters. This guide is the Im?m. It is also clear then that the selection of the Im?ms is a matter which could not be left to human error; they were Divinely appointed from birth. The true Im?ms are the direct line of ?Al?.

III. Muslim Messiah: Shia Mahdi Imamate

There are messiah figures found in all the Bible-derived religions. Both Jews and Christians expect the Messiah to come, although Christians believe he has already appeared in the form of Jesus. Now they await the Second Coming. In Islam is also found a messiah, called the al-Mahdi, according to to Abdulaziz Abdulhussein Sachedina in Islamic Messianism: The Idea of the Mahdi in Twelver Shi?ism. This figure owes much to Jewish and Christian doctrines, despite overall differences. Further, Sunni and Shia disagree as to what his nature will be, as well. According to Sachedina, the Muslim messiah is he who will ?appear? (zuhur) or ?rise? (qiyam) against the intolerable secularists and their depraved system.

Sachadina says the Muslim messiah differs from the Christian type in that he does not offer personal salvation since mankind is not dead in its sins. Neither does he offer national salvation into a separate, autonomous godly kingdom. Instead, the Mahdi is responsible for the creation of the umma, ?a worldwide membership of all those who believe in God and his revelation through Muhammad.?

One can trace the development of Shia Islam itself into the seeking of the godly Imam who comes back in the spirit of Muhammad, from a descendant of his lineage (ahl al-bayt). The Sunnis resisted any continuation of the line of Mohammad, considering this idolatry. Curiously, the development of the idea of Islamic salvation comes after the political establishment of the idea of the Muslim state, according to Sachedina, who writes:

Quranic teaching about salvation had to wait on historical events, and this fact undoubtedly had a major impact on their formulation. If the Islamic doctrine of salvation was conceived in the formation of an ideal religio-political community living under a fitting legal and social system of Islam on earth, then such an ideal was dependent on the leadership which could assure its realizationMost of these early discussions on the Imamate took at first sight political form, but eventually the debate encompassed the religious implications of salvation. This is true of all Islamic concepts, since Islam as a religious phenomenon was subsequent to Islam as a political reality.

The Sunnites looked upon salvation as possible only through the allegiance and loyalty of all believers in the community. As long as the community continued to be fully committed to the promulgation and observance of the Law (Shari?a), its salvation was guaranteed regardless of the qualities of the leader

The Shia rejected this, insisting that without a worthy messianic leader salvation was not certain, but acknowledging the rightness of the chosen Imam guarantees salvation. The general belief of Islam on its messiah was summed up by Ibn Khaldun:

It has been well known (and generally accepted) by all Muslims in every epoch, that at the end of time a man from the family (of the Prophet) will without fail make his appearance, one who will strengthen the religion and make justice triumph. The Muslims will follow him, and he will gain domination over the Muslim realm. He will be called the Mahdi. Following him, the Antichrist will appear, together with all the subsequent signs of the Hour (the Day of Judgment), as established in (the sound tradition of) the Sahih. After (the Mahdi), Isa (Jesus) will descend and kill the Antichrist. Or, Jesus will descend together with the Mahdi, and help him kill (the Antichrist), and have him as the leader in his prayers.

The Mahdi is not just a suffering, gentle leader who comes to exhort his followers towards good. Instead, he returns to take up arms and bring in the umma through force. It?s helpful that the Imam is also a sinless person, or is infallible (?isma), who also had the Light of God, passed down from the Prophets. The Prophetic weapons (al-silah) are also at his disposal, being those left behind by the Prophet?his sword, efficacious coat of mail, and short spear (anaza). Included in this bequest are many scrolls of knowledge, as well. In the chosen Imam dwells bodily the full ability to interpret all religious questions, and all knowledge.

IV. The Occultation (Ghayba)?Hidden Muslim Messiah

The term occultation in general means to obscure. In Shia the term concerns the doctrine of the hidden Imam, whom Allah sent into hiding until the time of the apocalypse. One site describes the doctrine:

For our master, mahdi - the expected one, there has been two occultations: the minor occultation and the major occultation. The minor occultation started from the time of mahdi?s birth and continued till the end of the special deputyship which lasted for seventy-four years. The major occultation commenced after the minor occultation and will continue as long as God wills mahdi to emerge and revolt with his might.

Writes David Thornton,

There were a total of twelve imams beginning with Imam Ali. The last imam was Mahmoud al-Mahdi who lived in Samarra, Iraq and was last seen in AD 874. Twelvers believe that al-Mahdi disappeared into ?occultation,? hiding in the spirit world, and is still alive. The Mahdi, as the twelfth imam is known, supposedly communicated from the spirit world through intermediaries called Babs, or ?gates.? The last Bab died in AD 941, marking the end of the lesser occultation and the beginning of the greater occultation. In the greater occultation, the Mahdi can no longer communicate with earth until he returns to earth shortly before the Final Judgment and the end of the world.

Twelver theology indicates that the twelfth imam will one day return when the world is in a time of great chaos and upheaval. The Mahdi will return to usher in a period of peace and justice under a worldwide Islamic caliphate. They also believe that Jesus Christ will return to rule alongside the Mahdi as his aide.

V. Apocalypse Before Paradise

The return of the righteous Mahdi is an expression of chiliastic belief, according to Sachadina. This is a biblically derived idea, where a religious leader comes to destroy evil and usher in a period of righteousness and orthodoxy. Fascinatingly, the Shia teach that the righteous Mahdi will team up with Jesus Christ for the Second Coming. Sachedina writes,

The Imamite doctrine of the Mahdi at one point merges with the return of Jesus, another prominent figure of Islamic eschatology. The doctrine of the return of Jesus, as described in the Sunnite sources and cited by the Shi?ite traditionists is explained in a more or less uniform manner.

He will descend in the Holy Land at a place called Afiq with a spear in his hand; he will kill with it al-Dajjal (the Antichrist of Islamic eschatology) and go to Jerusalem at the time of the morning prayer. The Imam will seek to yield his place to him, but Jesus will refuse and will worship behind him according to the Sharia of Muhammad. Thereafter he will kill the swine, break the cross, and kill all the Christians who do not believe in him.

The Antichrist is also portrayed in memorable imagery. Sachadina describes him,

He is one-eyed, his eye being in his forehead and shining like the morning star. On his forehead is written, ?This is the kafir (non-believer),? which will be legible to both literate and illiterate persons. His emergence will be preceded by a time of great hardship.

VI. Iran Versus Israel: Countdown to Armageddon?

Armageddon, or the Battle of Israel?s Megiddo Plain, is the final war before the Last Judgment and pits the forces of God against those of Anti-Christ (Revelation 16:16). Could Iran be bringing something resembling this onto the Middle East? Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a Shia who recently called for a New World Order at the United Nations. He stated, in part:

The current abysmal situation of the world and the bitter incidents of history are due mainly to the wrong management of the world and the self-proclaimed centers of power who have entrusted themselves to the devil. Continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality Are we to believe that those who spend hundreds of millions of dollars on election campaigns have the interest of the people of the world at their hearts? There is no doubt that the world is in need of a new order and a fresh way of thinking.

In fact, instead of asking for what is typically called the NWO, he is hearkening back to classic Mahdi doctrine. Further, he implies to his followers that his upcoming nuclear missile will help bring in the period of paradise after Israel is destroyed. Here, Ahmadinejad stated classic Shia Mahdi doctrine:

-God Almighty has promised us a man of kindness, a man who loves people and loves absolute justice, a man who is a perfect human being and is named Imam A1-Mahdi, a man who will come in the company of Jesus Christ (PBUH) and the righteous. By using the inherent potential of all the worthy men and women of all nations and I repeat, the inherent potential of ?all the worthy men and women of all nations? he will lead humanity into achieving its glorious and eternal ideals.

-The arrival of the Ultimate Savior will mark a new beginning, a rebirth and a resurrection. It will be the beginning of peace, lasting security and genuine life.

-His arrival will be the end of oppression, immorality, poverty, discrimination and the beginning of justice, love and empathy.

-He will come and he will cut through ignorance, superstition, prejudice by opening the gates of science and knowledge. He will establish a world brimful of prudence and he will prepare the ground for the collective, active and constructive participation of all in the global management.

Conclusion

Is America doing everything we can to stop World War III? In fact, it seems the current administration cannot even admit how Iran?s theology plays into their foreign policy. Yet, as we see from the above UN speech, the apocalypse and the Muslim messianic Mahdi is constantly in Iran?s thinking. So, if we don?t stop their building a nuclear weapon, we may have no choice but to watch the last war of mankind take place. So, what are we going to do?

US poised to add more points to big 8-4 lead

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? This Ryder Cup is turning into a rout.

After taking a commanding 8-4 lead with a near-sweep Saturday morning in the foursomes, the Americans didn't even give Europe a chance to recover before starting the next romp. The U.S. had the lead in all but one of the fourball matches, with Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson leading the way at 4 up through 13 holes over Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari.

Only Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods were missing out on the fun ? again ? down 4 to Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald at the turn.

The Americans need 14 1/2 points to regain the Ryder Cup. The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

"I keep telling the guys we're not even halfway over with this tournament so far," captain Davis Love III said after the morning matches. "There's a lot of points left, let's keep doing what we're doing. They're buying into it, they're playing great."

Turning Medinah Country Club into a big lovefest, too. Roars of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" echoed throughout the sun-kissed course, and the U.S. point total changes so often fans are going to have whiplash from checking the scoreboards.

And this is with Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson sitting out the afternoon matches.

Bradley and Mickelson kick-started the Americans' big day in record-tying fashion, thrashing Lee Westwood and Luke Donald 7 and 6. The two are on such a roll they didn't even have to putt to win their first two holes. The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.

Mickelson's gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald had another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans might as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.

Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope within a foot of the cup.

"Phil is a good partner to Keegan," Donald said. "He's obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong."

The 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara in 1991 the last to do it.

The victory made Bradley the first U.S. rookie to start 3-0 since Loren Roberts in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches.

The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker's 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Northern Irish duo are considered Europe's top team, the No. 1 player in the world and the guy who delivered the winning point for Europe two years ago at Celtic Manor. But they've looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Friday's foursomes, and they couldn't overcome their slow start Saturday.

"We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format," McDowell said. "We just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldn't get any momentum going."

Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyk and Snedeker's lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.

McIlroy's monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve ? especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.

When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded.

"We are in a hole," McDowell said. "These guys, there's blood in the water and they're up for it. They've got a head of steam up and we've got to try and stop it."

Loop the loop, DNA style: One- or two-way transcription depends on gene loops

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Scientists at EMBL and Oxford University discovered that, by forming or undoing gene loops, cells manipulate the path of the transcription machinery -- which reads out instructions from DNA -- controlling whether it moves along the genetic material in one direction or two.

In certain toy racecar tracks, sneaky players can flip a switch, trapping their opponents' vehicles in a loop of track. Cells employ a less subtle approach: they change the track's layout. In a study published online September 28 in Science, scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and Oxford University discovered that, by forming or undoing gene loops, cells manipulate the path of the transcription machinery -- which reads out instructions from DNA -- controlling whether it moves along the genetic material in one direction or two.

"We found that gene loops can turn bi-directional promoters into one-way systems," says Lars Steinmetz, who led the work at EMBL.

Three years ago, Steinmetz's lab discovered that when the transcription machinery lands on most genes' promoters -- the sequences that mark where transcription should start -- it moves not only along the gene, but also in the opposite direction, along the other 'lane' of DNA. But they were somewhat surprised that this didn't happen everywhere: some genes, it seemed, had promoters that worked only one-way.

Nicholas Proudfoot's group at Oxford University, in the meantime, discovered that genes can bend into a loop, so that when the transcription machinery reaches the end of the gene, it finds itself back at the beginning and starts again, like a trapped toy car. Proudfoot's group also found that inactivating a specific protein prevented these gene loops from forming.

Looking throughout the whole genome of yeast cells, Steinmetz, Proudfoot and colleagues have now found that when genes with 'one-way' promoters can't form loops, transcription from those promoters becomes bi-directional. It seems that with no transcription 'cars' trapped in a loop, more are free to move in the opposite direction. And by doing so, they can affect other genes. So by forming or undoing gene loops, cells can control not only what happens to the looping genes themselves, but also adjust the spread of regulation throughout the genome.

The researchers would now like to understand how and when loops form, for instance in response to changes in a cell's environment, and how unlooping affects the transcription of short DNA sequences within the gene. And Steinmetz has another burning question: what happens in cases where a promoter activates transcription of two genes? "Are they each in a loop? What's going on there?" he wonders.

Sticker Shock: How much it costs to charge your favorite electronics

Apple's newest gadgets sip electricity; your TV is a power hog

There's one inescapable truth about our gadget-filled culture?? all that tech, from iPhone to iPad to big-screen TV, has to be plugged into an electrical outlet at some point. And while feeding 1980s-era electronic devices battery after battery was an exorbitantly costly endeavor, Apple and friends have made strides to make sure that unlike some home energy hogs, our newest batch of electronics barely use electricity at all.

Research firm Opower took a look at today's most popular devices from the Apple iPhone 5 to the Samsung Galaxy S III, measuring exactly how much juice they sip from outlets. Here, the iPhone 5 beats out the Galaxy S?? the former will cost you only 41 cents per year worth of electricity, while the latter will set you back 53 cents. The older iPhone 4 cost only $0.38 per year to charge, while a new iPad requires $1.36 to keep powered.

Other household devices eat up a lot more energy. It's estimated that charging a laptop will cost you about $8.31 per year; a desktop, $28.21. And if you use your TV as your main source of entertainment, things get even more expensive: Your set-top box gobbles $30.20 worth of electricity, an Xbox 360 console consumes $40.24 per year, and a 42-inch plasma television eats up $41.13.

The new report is great news for environmentalists: As Americans get more reliant on their phones for communication, entertainment, and internet, older, more costly-to-run devices will get left sitting unused. So if you're worried about high electric bills, turn off that TV, grab your wifi-enabled tablet or phone, and enjoy.

Missouri surges, wins 21-16 at Central Florida

Marcus Murphy returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and James Franklin added an 80-yard touchdown pass as Missouri ground out a 21-16 win over Central Florida on Saturday.

UCF trailed 21-10 before a late score, but following a Tigers punt, Knights receiver Jeff Godfrey's fumble with 2:26 left allowed Missouri (3-2) to hang on.

UCF (2-2) controlled most of the game, using five sacks and a huge advantage in time of possession to take an early lead.

But miscues on defense and special teams unraveled it all, and the Knights sputtered on offense down the stretch in their bid to defeat their first Southeastern Conference opponent at home.

Coming off a dismal passing performance last week at South Carolina, Franklin was efficient, going 19 for 30 for 257 yards.

Kendial Lawrence added 104 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Tigers.

Knights quarterback Blake Bortles kept his team in the game, connecting on 29 of his 43 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns.

Prior to Murphy's punt return, the Knights looked to be taking control of the game, leading 10-7 and coming off an interception and fourth sack of Franklin early in the third quarter.

But the slide continued with Missouri capitalizing on a short punt and needing just three plays to take its 21-10 advantage with 9:31 to play in the game.

Offense was plentiful in the first half, with both teams using big plays through the air to reach the end zone.

Missouri had several promising drives stall early before getting on the board via an 80-yard touchdown strike from Franklin to Dorial Green-Beckham. That gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter.

UCF defensive back A.J. Bouye briefly had Green-Beckham locked up by the legs near the 50 before slipping to the turf. Green-Beckham then sprinted untouched into the end zone.

The play, the Tigers' longest from scrimmage this season, also was a career-best for Franklin.

The Knights responded on the ensuing drive, with Bortles using a 41-yard pass to Rob Calabrese to set up an 11-yard touchdown pass to Quincy McDuffie.

Following a series of punts, UCF got hot again and drove the ball from its own 12 all the way inside the Tigers' 10 with less than 2 minutes to play in the half.

A pass interference call on Missouri gave the Knights first-and-goal on the 3. But after a stuffed run and incomplete pass, the opportunity was squandered as Bortles was sacked, and time expired before the Knights could run out their field goal team.

Despite the final miscue, the Knights' offense had one of their best opening halves of the season with Bortles completing 12 straight passes at one point and 18 for 22 overall for 156 yards. Johnson also averaged nearly 8 yards per carry in racking up 84 yards rushing.

The Tigers were successful at times with their hurry-up offense, but UCF's defense also helped keep Franklin off balance, sacking him three times in the opening 30 minutes.

California law will aid injured student athletes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? California will become the first state to mandate financial protections for student athletes who suffer career-ending injuries in some of the state's top college sports programs under a bill Gov. Jerry Brown announced signing Thursday.

SB1525 protects athletes at the four universities that receive more than $10 million annually in sports media revenue ? the University of Southern California, UCLA, Berkeley and Stanford.

They will have to give academic scholarships to students who lose their athletic scholarships if they are injured while playing their sport. They also will have to cover insurance deductibles and pay health care premiums for low-income athletes, among other provisions.

The legislation requires the universities to pay future medical costs for on-the-field injuries, providing student-athletes with the kind of guarantees that even some professional athletes don't receive.

"Neither personal injury nor poverty should dim the dreams of a student-athlete pursuing a college degree, particularly when their performance has enriched their college," Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Of the four schools, only Stanford objected to the final version of the bill, saying it is unfair to include only the top money-generating universities. Padilla said his bill eventually could affect San Diego State University, as well, because it recently switched to a different conference with more lucrative television rights.

His legislation was one of several higher education bills the governor announced signing.

Another, AB970, would require the University of California and California State University systems to provide public notice and consult with students before raising tuition.

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

(AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

Iranian news agency picks up Onion article as fact

(AP) ? A joke by the satirical newspaper The Onion appears to have gotten lost in translation.

An Iranian news agency picked up ? as fact ? a story from the paper about a supposed survey showing an overwhelming majority of rural white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than President Barack Obama. But it was made up, like everything in the just-for-laughs newspaper, which is headquartered in Chicago.

The English-language service of Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency republished the story Friday, several days after it appeared in The Onion.

The Iranian version copied the original word-for-word, even including a made-up quote from a fictional West Virginia resident who says he'd rather go to a baseball game with Ahmadinejad because "he takes national defense seriously, and he'd never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does."

Homosexual acts are punishable by death in Iran, and Ahmadinejad famously said during a 2007 appearance at Columbia University that "in Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

The Iranian version of the article leaves out only The Onion's description of Ahmadinejad as "a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and has had numerous political prisoners executed."

The article was featured prominently on the Fars website alongside its usual fare of stories about advances in Iranian military technology, condemnation of Israel and Iran's nuclear program. The story appeared to have been taken down by about mid-day, Chicago time.

Calls to Fars representatives were not answered Friday.

The Onion reveled in the fact that it had been taken seriously.

Onion editor Will Tracy put out a tongue-in-cheek statement that referred to Fars as "a subsidiary of The Onion" that has acted as the paper's Middle Eastern bureau since it was founded in the mid-1980s by Onion publisher T. Herman Zweibel.

"The Onion freely shares content with Fars and commends the journalists at Iran's Finest News Source on their superb reportage," Tracy said in jest.

It's not the first time a foreign news outlet has been duped by The Onion. In 2002, the Beijing Evening News, one of the Chinese capital's biggest newspapers, picked up a story from The Onion that claimed members of Congress were threatening to leave Washington unless the building underwent a makeover that included more bathrooms and a retractable dome.

Group claims Da Vinci painted early Mona Lisa work

GENEVA (AP) ? A Zurich-based foundation says it will prove to the world Thursday that Leonardo Da Vinci painted an earlier version of the Mona Lisa ? a claim doubted by at least one expert on the multifaceted Renaissance artist.

The Mona Lisa Foundation, which has been working with the anonymous owners of the "Isleworth Mona Lisa," says that after 35 years of research, experts believe it predates the famed 16th-century masterpiece by some 11 or 12 years based on regression tests, mathematical comparisons and historical and archival records.

"So far, not one scientific test has been able to disprove that the painting is by Leonardo," said art historian Stanley Feldman, a foundation member and principal author of a foundation book entitled "Mona Lisa: Leonardo's Earlier Version" to be released Thursday. "We have used methods that were not available to Leonardo 500 years ago."

"When we do a very elementary mathematical test, we have discovered that all of the elements of the two bodies ? the two people, the two sitters ? are in exactly the same place," Feldman told The Associated Press by phone. "It strikes us that in order for that to be so accurate, so meticulously exact, only the person who did one did the other ... It's an extraordinary revelation in itself, and we think it's valid."

The Isleworth painting ? likewise a portrait of a young woman with an enigmatic smile ? is slightly larger, was painted on canvas and has brighter colors than the famed Louvre Museum masterpiece painted on wood. The posture, folded hand positions, faces, expressions and clothing are similar, while the landscape in the background is different.

The foundation says the painting turned up in the home of an English nobleman in the late 1800s ? thus the connection to Isleworth ? and was shipped to the United States for safekeeping during World War I. After the war, it was analyzed in Italy, and eventually taken to Switzerland where it remained in a bank vault for the last 40 years, the group said.

The Isleworth Mona Lisa has been known publicly for generations ? if forgotten by the broader public ? and the book excerpts numerous news headlines about the painting and the possibility of its Da Vinci connection in the early 20th century.

Martin Kemp, an Oxford University professor and Leonardo expert, wrote in an e-mail that "the reliable primary evidence provides no basis for thinking that there was 'an earlier' portrait of Lisa del Giocondo" ? referring to the subject of the painting that's known as the Mona Lisa in English and La Joconde in French.

Kemp questioned the "debatable interpretations" of source material about the Isleworth painting, and said that scientific analysis cannot categorically deny that Da Vinci didn't paint it. However, he added: "The infrared reflectography and X-ray points very strongly to its not being by Leonardo."

"The Isleworth Mona Lisa miss-translates subtle details of the original, including the sitter's veil, her hair, the translucent layer of her dress, the structure of the hands ... " Kemp wrote. "The landscape is devoid of atmospheric subtlety. The head, like all other copies, does not capture the profound elusiveness of the original."

The Louvre Museum declined to comment.

Use These Tips To Help You Buy Your Next Home - Maynas Eric Chua

In the current economy, many people are hesitant to invest in real estate. Concerns include the legalities involved as well as the condition of the real estate market. Here are some suggestions to help navigate the unsettled sea of buying real estate today.

When you are looking for a home, never purchase one just because of the way it looks. Smart sellers hide their house?s flaws with decorative items, so you need to learn how to look past the decor and analyze a home based on its architecture and structural condition. If you purchase one for the objects inside, you are missing out on the things that are wrong with it that can be a disaster later.

It is important to get pre-qualified for a home loan before you go searching for a house. The most obvious reason to pre-qualify is that you might hit upon your dream home, only to find out that you can?t afford it with your current income and credit score. Securing financing can take a long time, and you don?t want to lose your house waiting for that loan.

TIP! When you are experiencing turmoil in your job, be cautious about buying real estate. Once your signature is on mortgage documents, you will be responsible for your payments, regardless of changes in your personal life.

When purchasing a foreclosure, it is to your benefit to hire an attorney. The foreclosure process is complicated and can go awry easily. Therefore, it?s good to have a lawyer watching your back. The proper legal representation can save you money and headaches over the long run.

There are quite a few payment assistance programs that you can make a down payment on, ready for you to use. It is in your best interest to find these. These programs can make saving to buy a house much less of financial burden for you, especially if you can also convince the seller to handle the purchase?s closing costs.

When you are buying a new property, you need to have some liquid funds available for unexpected expenses. Buyers will often calculate the final closing costs by combining the amount for the down payment, any points that go to the bank, as well as any prorated taxes for real estate. In many cases, the closing cost will include extra items like improvement bonds, school taxes, and anything else that is specific to that area.

TIP! Prioritize your wants and needs when hammering out a real estate purchase. Clarify the nature of each issue and create well-defined expectations for each specific concern.

If you are interested in a rental property, make inquiries regarding who is responsible for the gardening before you sign the lease. A lot of landlords will want you to do your own gardening and lawn work. However, this service is included with some rentals, with the cost of it already incorporated into the rent.

Homes that need multiple improvements or updates are sold at a reduced price. This gives you the opportunity to get in at a lower cost, and spend money in smaller bursts over time as you make repairs. You can build equity in your home while making improvements that maximize its livability for you and your family. It is important to look at the positive potential in the home rather than the drawbacks. Your dream house might just be a diamond in the rough.

TIP! Never close a deal on a house before you have it inspected by an inspection professional. You do not want to be stuck with a house that needs major renovations.

You are already aware of an asking price on a potential home, but you should also have your offer firmly in mind. When you make an offer to the seller that is less than the asking price, the seller will often come back with a counteroffer of some greater amount. Compromise between the asking price and your original offer will usually determine the price you and a seller agree upon, and it is usually one you can both live with.

When you are looking to make a great investment on your real estate, you should consider doing some repair and remodel work. As you work on the home, the property value will increase and therefore, you will see the benefits of your investment immediately. In some cases, the increase in property value is greater than the amount of money that you invested into the work.

You should understand all the different dynamics in real estate buying, including online, so please listen to these tips. Understanding all of the steps in buying, and the potential pitfalls, helps you feel more confident and comfortable as you work your way through the process, and hopefully you will soon find yourself the proud owner of a new piece of real

TIP! Get a home warranty. When purchasing a new home, either from the builder, or an older home from the previous owner, ask for a warranty.

Bone health supplements - The saviour for a busy lifestyle

We often neglect maintaining the quality of our health. Just having good health is not enough. We need strong bones, bone density, optimal bone mass and bone renewal. These are all areas that one must not neglect. Apart from proteins, minerals, vitamin D and vitamins we should also take care of nutritional elements that take care of our bones. Thanks to the progress in the field of science we now have the option of taking bone health supplements.

While taking bone health supplements make sure you keep these in mind. Food is the best source of calcium ultimately. Bone health supplements are just another option when we find no time to bother about whether our food has calcium or not. Absorption of these supplements is better when taken with food or soon after a meal. Also make sure you take the amount that has been prescribed by your healthcare provider. Your body can only absorb a limited amount of calcium.

Make sure you take bone health supplements with food because they are best absorbed when taken with food. Choose calcium citrate in case, it is not possible to take it with food. Also taking purified bone health supplements is of utmost importance. Avoid supplements that are made from unrefined oysters or bone meal that are not branded because they may contain high levels of lead or other toxic metals. One should also be aware of the fact that bone or joint pain supplements come with their share of side effects. Some people might not be able to digest it itself. Also check with drug reactions and consult your health care provider for the same. Sometimes some bone health supplements can interfere with other medications and vitamins you?re taking. Also don?t take anything on an empty stomach because it can really be harmful.

Similar is the case when it comes to taking joint pain supplements. A lot of care needs to be taken. There might be more than 350 causes of joint pain. It could be injury or a disease. The most common form of joint pain is osteoarthritis, which affects many people in the world. Even younger people are facing this issue. There are many joint pain supplements in the market that can be taken for joint pain. Some help the formation while some help in repair. A few others help in lubricating and cushioning damaged joints. All of this thereby relieves inflammation and the pain in joints. All adults must exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet to keep bones and joints healthy. The most common joint pain supplements and bone health supplements are glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 fish oil, such as cod liver oil.

So all you need to do is be careful while taking these supplements. Only the reliable ones must be taken with care or else you will end up doing more damage to your health than good.
