High School Launching New Communications Program ...

The future writers, broadcasters, editors and radio personalities of Collingswood have a lot to celebrate in 2012.

During this month's meeting, Collingswood High School Principal Edward T. Hill gave a presentation to members of Collingswood Public School District Board of Education. The topic? Communications.

"One program we're excited about (at the high school) is our new media and communications program," said Hill. "It's a school-choice program, limited to students who want to be a part of it. (For students,) it'll be like (being a communications) major?in high school."

Next year, interested students may opt to be part of the program, which Hill said will give them a professional advantage post-graduation.

"(Because of this program), when our students graduate high school, they'll have the tools necessary to be successful in the area of communications, so that in college, they'll already have knowledge and field experience ," said Hill.

According to Hill, Collingswood High School's new communications program will allow 15 students to take Television I, II, III, and IV courses. Electives will also be available, including classes like Journalism, Graphic Arts, Public Speaking, and Photography.

Hill said administration will use a selection process to determine which students may participate.

"Interested students will fill out applications?which will include recommendations?and will be interviewed by our department chair," said Hill.

During their senior year, communications students will get the opportunity to take internships related to a specialized field in the industry.

"Rowan University is interested in developing an articulation agreement with our high school," said Hill.

According to the principal, besides Sterling, no other high school in the area offer students access to specialized experience in communications.

Even the borough's pre-high school students will be able to try their hand in the world of media. Next year, Hill said Collingswood Middle School eighth- and ninth-graders will be eligible for the communications program.

While the new program will offer students media experience they wouldn't otherwise be exposed to at other schools, Collingswood High School had an impressive list of media outlets before the communications track even existed.

High-schoolers have always had access to editorial positions on the school yearbook committee, which has students writing, designing page layouts, using artistic abilities, editing text, and manipulating photos.

The Paw Print?the high school newspaper, which is published five times each year?is another preexisting media opportunity, which involved students reporting on school news, taking photos, and practicing newspaper layout and design.

Two television-based opportunities preceded the new communications program as well: the WCHS Television Club, and the school TV station, PAWS TV.

WCHS club members use computer software to edit and produce videos, which are broadcast in town and at school events.

PAWS TV has students producing programs for Collingswood TV, by heading preproduction, film editing, and broadcasting.

But Collingswood High School's new communications program will add even more niche-specific facets of communications an already-impressive media roster.

"Will it work?" Hill asked, referring to the new program. "I think the excitement about it at our school says, 'yes.'"

Thousands Of Lives Could Be Saved By Simple Test To Help Diagnose Bowel And Pancreatic Cancer

email icon email to a friend ? printer icon printer friendly ? write icon opinions ? Based on using single 'red flag' symptoms such as rectal bleeding, doctors could miss 60 per cent of current bowel cancers.

For the research, published in the same edition of the BJGP, academics used anonymous data from the same 564 GP surgeries to develop and test the colorectal cancer algorithm by looking at a combination of risk factors, including age, family history of bower cancer, anaemia, symptoms including rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, appetite loss, weight loss, diarrhoea and changes in bowel habits. The researchers also took into account the different risks affecting men and women.

The study found that the algorithm was very successful in spotting which patients would be most likely to develop bowel cancer over the following two years - 70 per cent of all bowel cancer patients subsequently diagnosed were in the top 10 per cent of patients predicted to be most at risk, The two studies used the anonymous data of patients aged between 30 and 84 years old who were all free from diagnosis or symptoms of the two cancers over the previous 12 months. The GPs' practices were all contributing to the QResearch? database system - a not-for-profit partnership between The University of Nottingham and leading GP systems supplier EMIS.

The new algorithms for pancreatic and bowel cancer could be incorporated into existing GP computer systems to alert doctors to patients who are potentially most at risk of developing the diseases.

They could support the work of GPs in reducing diagnosis times in line with current Government policy and the National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI) - a public/third sector partnership between the Department of Health, National Cancer Action Team and Cancer Research UK. Evidence suggests that simply raising awareness of symptoms and speeding up diagnosis could save 5,000 lives per year without any new advances in medicine.

The study has resulted in two simple web calculators - one for pancreatic cancer (1) and one for bowel cancer (2) - which are designed for doctors but a simpler version could also be made available on the internet to raise awareness among the general public and to prompt patients with risk factors or symptoms to seek advice from their doctor.

Similar QResearch? scores have already proven effective in previous research in identifying patients at most risk of developing lung cancer, gastro-oesophageal cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, fractures, kidney disease and serious blood clots.

Dr Clare Gerada, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, which publishes the BJGP, said: "Early diagnosis, and access to appropriate diagnostic tests and tools, can make an enormous difference to the treatment and outcomes of patients with cancer and this new calculator, which is concerned with two of the most deadly forms of cancer, has the potential to save many lives.

"Professor Hippisley-Cox and her colleagues at The University of Nottingham are leading the way in devising simple but effective ways to help GPs speed up and improve their identification and diagnosis of cancer, and they should be rightly proud of this new research.

"The very foundation of the British Journal of General Practitioners is research such as this, which serves to improve the care GPs across the UK and further afield are able to provide to their patients."

Professor Hippisley-Cox added: "We are very grateful for the continuing support of the EMIS GP practices that contribute their high quality data to QResearch. Without them, our research would not be possible."

Nicki Minaj Is 'Reloaded' After A Breakthrough 2011

Britney Spears tour and 'Super Bass' smash fuel the Young Money rapper's ascent.

More than a few hip-hop fans will point to Kanye West's single "Monster" as a defining moment in Nicki Minaj's rap career. The newcomer from Queens, New York, managed to one-up Jay-Z on the track, with arguably one of the best verses of 2010, but it wasn't until this year that the Trinidad-born firecracker broke through the noise and took pop culture by storm, catapulting her career to new heights.

Fresh off a stint alongside Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour, which grossed $47 million in the U.S., Minaj — #6 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list — made one of her biggest career leaps when she scored a spot opening for Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour. Before the cross-country jaunt kicked off, the world got a chance to see the two take the stage together at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, where Minaj joined the pop icon for her "Till the World Ends (Remix)."

An increased fanbase was the result of that tour, but Minaj's Pink Friday single "Super Bass" also had plenty to do with her rising profile. The catchy tune, with its colorful video, caught the attention of pop audiences thanks to glowing endorsements from stars like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. After Swift professed her love for "Super Bass" in a radio interview, the song took on a life of its own, climbing the music charts, although it was just a bonus track on Minaj's debut album. Minaj performed the track with Swift at the L.A. Staples Center this past summer, and she also scooped up a Moonman for Best Hip-Hop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.

With a touring spot next to Spears and the success of "Super Bass," the doors were wide open for Minaj to dominate the spotlight for the remainder of 2011. After making a quick and successful leap from hip-hop notoriety to pop-star fame, it was inevitable that the beauty and fashion world would be next to take notice. Minaj's off-the-wall style attracted promotional deals from cosmetic companies such as MAC and OPI, as well as a few new well-heeled fans.

In November, the Young Money rapper teamed up with Versace to debut the Italian fashion house's new collection for H&M. At the request of Donatella Versace herself, Nicki shared a performance bill with Prince to unveil the new line in New York City. Less than 24 hours later, she joined Kanye West and Jay-Z as one of the performers at the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

After making so much noise across hip-hop, pop and fashion this year, it was impossible for awards shows to ignore the Barbie princess. In addition to her wins at the VMAs and the 2011 American Music Awards, Minaj also nabbed a coveted nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Minaj's sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is due February 14, 2012.

Russian customs seize Iran-bound radioactive metal

(AP) ? Russia's customs agency said Friday that it seized radioactive metal from the luggage of an Iranian passenger bound for Tehran.

Spokeswoman Kseniya Grebenkina told The Associated Press that the luggage had been seized some time ago, but could not specify when. The Iranian hasn't been detained, she said.

The Federal Customs Service said in a statement that its agents found 18 pieces of metal at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport after a radiation alert went on. It says the gauges showed that radiation levels were 20 times higher than normal.

It was not immediately clear if the substance could have any use in Iran's controversial nuclear program.

The pieces contained Sodium-22, she said, a radioactive isotope of sodium that could be produced in a particle accelerator. Sodium-22 is a positron-emitting isotope that has medical uses, including in nuclear medicine imaging.

Grebenkina said prosecutors have launched a probe into the incident.

Sergei Novikov, spokesman for the Rosatom nuclear agency, told the AP that the pieces are highly unlikely to have come from Rosatom and said the isotope is produced by particle accelerators, not by nuclear reactors.

In Russia, universities, research institutes and big medical centers have the technology to produce it, he said.

"There is an extremely slim chance that it could have come from Rosatom," he said.

Novikov said that Rosatom has never sold Sodium-22 to Iran, but it has supplied it with other types of medical isotopes.

Grebenkina of the Customs Service insisted that the material seized is not highly radioactive.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday endorsed harsher sanctions against Iran aimed at derailing its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons. Iran denies Western allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons.

Earlier this year, Atomstroiexport, a Rosatom subsidiary, launched Iran's first nuclear reactor in Bushehr.

Russian officials have insisted that the deal with Iran is in line with international agreements and will oblige Tehran to ship all the spent fuel from the plant back to Russia for reprocessing to avoid a possibility of it being used in a covert weapons program.

Local shelter lists homeless pets online | Augusta Free Press

Shenandoah Valley Animal Services in Lyndhurst has joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet.

The site currently has over 359,000 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously.

More than 13,500 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. Shenandoah Valley Animal Services pets may be viewed at www.petfinder.com/shelters/VA599.html.

A potential adopter enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the Zip code entered. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies.

Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jared and Betsy Saul to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets. Since its inception, the site has facilitated approximately 20 million adoptions, making it the most life-saving initiative in animal welfare.

Sponsors include The Animal Rescue Site, BISSELL Homecare, Inc., a manufacturer of home cleaning and floor care products, PETCO, a national pet supply retailer that sponsors in-store adoptions and provides coupon books for new adopters, PetFirst Healthcare, the exclusive pet insurance provider for Petfinder.com, Merial, maker of the number one veterinary-recommended flea and tick preventative, FRONTLINE(r), and heartworm preventative, HEARTGARD(r), And HomeAgain, a microchip and pet recovery service.

Rudy: Mitt is world class flip flopper (Politico)

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani unleashed a blistering attack Thursday on Mitt Romney, saying he?s never seen anyone change positions on core issues as often or as quickly as the ex-Massachusetts governor.

?I ran against him in ?07 and ?08, I?ve never seen a guy change his position so many times, so fast, on a dime,? Giuliani said on MSNBC?s Morning Joe.

In an extended rant against Romney, Giuliani said the Republican hopeful switched from pro-choice to pro-life; pro-gun control to becoming an NRA supporter; pro-cap and trade to being against cap and trade, among other shifts.

?He figures out there are embryos and changes? his mind on abortion, Giuliani said. ?He was pro-mandate [for health care] for the whole country, then he becomes anti-mandate and takes that page out of his book, and republishes the book.?

Giuliani said that these flip-flops will make for electoral disaster.

?I think that is a great vulnerability? what will Barack Obama do to that?? the former New York City mayor asked. ?What Barack Obama will do with that [is say] ?this is a man without a core, a man without substance, a man that will say anything to become president of the United States.??

By contrast, Giuliani glowingly compared former Republican speaker Newt Gingrich to Ronald Reagan.

?I think Newt has his set of vulnerabilities, but a more consistent position with real ideas like Ronald Reagan had,? he said. ?I remember the Carter White House just dying for Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was the dumb actor, said incendiary things.?

Giuliani said he was defending Gingrich as a candidate ?in this imperfect world, and maybe also reacting to everybody coming after Newt. It?s getting ridiculous now, it?s like this guy is some kind of monster.?

?It may be that Newt is appealing to something that Mitt isn?t appealing to,? he added.

Giuliani continued his attack in a later appearance on Fox News, blasting Romney for being ?so darn negative? in his campaign.

?I was really offended by his comment that Newt Gingrich is ?zany?,? he said. ?That isn?t the kind of language that should be coming from a candidate and it reminds me of what he did in ?08, where he attacked me, he attacked McCain, he attacked Huckabee. Whoever was out front, he would attack.?

He added of voters, ?They don?t want to see a Republican savaging another Republican.?

Giuliani also expressed confidence that Gingrich could seize the Republican nomination.

?I think Newt can get elected. I don?t see why Newt can?t get elected,? he said. ?Romney?s about three points better than Newt. That means nothing.?

AP Sources: Dem lawmakers may drop millionaire tax (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Officials say Democratic lawmakers are considering whether to jettison their demand for a surtax on millionaires as a way of covering the cost of a Social Security payroll tax cut extension.

These officials stress that no decisions have been made. If party leaders go ahead, it would mark a concession to Republicans in the year-end standoff over the tax cut extension that President Barack Obama requested and leaders in both parties say they want.

The officials declined to be identified by name because they were discussing legislative strategy.

The disclosure came as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other leading Democrats went to the White House to meet with Obama.

The subject of the meeting was not announced.

Greek man claims for 19 kids-none real, police say (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? A former Greek policeman who invented 19 fictional offspring to claim benefits for what would have been the largest family in Greece has been arrested for benefit fraud, police said.

The former police officer, divorced and with no children of his own, quit his 1,000-euro-a-month ($1,300) job in 2001 and has been living solely on benefits ever since, police said on Thursday.

Using photographs of children he found online, the 54-year-old man forged birth certificates and other documents needed to claim benefits for at least one child a year since 1996.

Police estimate he made at least 150,000 euros in claims over 15 years, but the actual amount is probably much higher.

The fraud was so expert, police said, that they only realized something was amiss when they noticed his was the only Greek family with that many children. The average Greek family usually has two or three children.

"We have never seen (a scam) like this before," said a police official who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The former policeman, who under Greek law cannot be named, was arrested Wednesday as he was about to collect 8,000 euros in benefits from an Athens branch of Greece's employment agency OAED. He was taken to the prosecutor's office Thursday.

Widespread fraud, a generous welfare state and a notoriously inefficient public sector have been blamed as root causes of Greece's financial trouble that threatens to break apart the euro zone.

A team of tax investigators recently discovered that a seemingly humble Greek farmer on the island of Thasos, who owned a red Ferrari and a Porsche, was in fact into loan sharking. ($1 = 0.7721 euros)
